FIRST LOOK: EMMA MACKEY IS EMILY BRONTË
Principal Photography has commenced in the UK on Emily – a writer-director debut for Frances O’Connor, who tells Emily Brontë’s origin story.
Emma Mackey (Sex Education, Death on the Nile) leads a cast of vibrant young British talent, including Fionn Whitehead (Dunkirk, Voyagers), Oliver Jackson-Cohen (The Invisible Man), Alexandra Dowling (The Musketeers) and Amelia Gething (The Spanish Princess). BAFTA nominee Gemma Jones (Ammonite, Rocketman) and Adrian Dunbar (Line of Duty) also join the cast.
From a self-penned script, double Golden Globe nominee O’Connor imagines a transformative, inspiring, and exhilarating journey to womanhood of one of the world’s most famous, enigmatic and passionate writers, author of the seminal Wuthering Heights.
Frances O’Connor says, “Emily Brontë’s writing is steeped in such passion, feeling, violence, and fierce intelligence – that I’ve always yearned to know who she really was. Emily is about a rebel and misfit, a young woman daring to form herself, to embrace her true nature, despite the consequences. And, in creating an imagined life for her, I hope Emily Brontë will live again!
Our film will brim with energy – intimately capturing the emotional intensity and adrenalin of youth, with all its messy honesty, heartbreak, humour and fearlessness; matched by the scale of our stunning locations.”
Produced by Piers Tempest (Military Wives, Ordinary Love, The Wife) and David Barron (Harry Potter franchise, Cinderella, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit) and with Robert Connolly and Robert Patterson of Arenamedia (The Dry, Paper Planes). Finance is provided by Ingenious Media, Spitfire Audio Holdings, The Post Republic and Tempo. Jo Bamford and Peter Touche executive produce.
